Can we talk on the phone?

Can we talk on the phone?

These days we have so many forms of communication, it’s not just the good old telephone.

A lot of people still talk on the phone, but there are also a lot of people who prefer text message, and email. I’m one of those people who prefer to text message and email.

Some people communicate better in different ways, and I just don’t like to talk on the phone. I find text messages better than phone calls for a lot of reasons. One of the main reasons is time.

The time it takes to write a message, and for the other person to read it, and send back a message, and then each send each other a few more messages, is just much more time efficient than a phone call. Plus the text messages can be spread out, over a few minutes, or a few hours, or while you are doing other things in between!

I always have both my phones on silent, all the time. I never answer the phone, it’s just not the way I do business. I don’t even answer the phone to people I know. It’s just not my preferred method of communication.

Sure, I love to talk, but face to face, in person.

My phone isn’t allowed to even make a noise when I get a text message, email, or anything else.

The way I see it, we’re supposed to have technology in our lives to make our lives easier, not harder.

I’ll check the phone when I want to check the phone – Not when the phone wants me to check it.

Besides, I get that many phone calls, that I’ve calculated that in an average day, if I answered the phone every time it rang, and spoke to each person for say, two minutes (probably not long enough to exchange much information) I’d be on the phone for around an hour every day. That just sounds crazy to me.

I am a focused person, who is almost always getting things done. I’ve always got something going on. I create a goal, and I get it done.

I’m very focused, very busy, and think about it, it doesn’t make sense to let that focus be broken at any time, to answer the phone. I think we often let technology control us a bit too much.

If you’re in the middle of something important, or you’re thinking of a great idea, or you’re relaxing… Suddenly that phone rings and you think ‘gee I’d better answer it,’ and there goes whatever you were doing, thinking about, or your state of relaxation.

Sure, you can multi-task, but it’s not the same.

If you really want to talk on the phone before we meet for the first time, let me know, and I may consider it. Probably not though, as I’m very busy, and most clients send me a text message, or an email, as the first form of contact.

You hear some people say that their friends mustn’t really be their friends, because they don’t talk to them on the phone. Well that’s bullshit, some people just don’t talk on the phone, and they can still be friends. People can still care about and love their friends and loved ones, and yet not feel like talking on the phone.

It’s a very busy world, and everyone has their favourite ways to communicate with someone when you’re not face to face, in the same room. Some people like to answer the phone when it rings, but I don’t. I don’t even like to call someone on the phone, because it’s going to interrupt their day – and I don’t like having my day interrupted by a phone ringing, so I don’t want to interrupt other people either, LoL.

And plus, my phone never rings because it’s always on silent. Everyone’s different. You do you. I do me. And if we’re meant to be in touch, we’ll find a way.

Don’t let your phone be all like this…
