Book review time

Book review time

I’ve always loved reading, and given that I’m so busy, and don’t have much time to pick up a book – plus I drive quite a lot, so I can make the most of time – I love listening to audiobooks.

I’ve listened to some really great audiobooks in the last month or so, and thought I’d share a little review on each of them with you.

The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness Through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness

Author: Hugh van Cuylenburg

In this book, Hugh tells the story of events in his early life that inspired him to make it his goal to provide young people with the support they need to have a good life; and good mental health.
He tells the story of The Resilience Project, and all the inspirational things that went into creating it.

It is really well written, and each chapter focuses on a different area of his life.

Hugh has been a primary school teacher, and when he and his wife decided to travel to India and stay a while, he was deeply inspired by some students of a school where he decided to teach, in a rural village.

He was intrigued by how the students, one in particular, who had almost nothing compared to students in Australia (a lot of them didn’t have shoes they could wear to school, and the playground consisted of a chain dangling where a swing used to be) could be so happy.

The book shows how we can decide to have gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness, and that these qualities can make us much happier, and help others to become happier.

Hugh started teaching The Resilience Project to schools, and eventually was in such demand, and was asked to present to the National Rugby League, and the AFL, and many other places.

This book is really inspiring, and hard to stop reading (or, listening to!) and follows the stories of a few people integral to the inspiration of the project.

I always have gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness every day. I think this is very important -and to hear this story, and how it’s progressed, is truly wonderful.

The Happiest Man on Earth

Author: Eddie Jaku

Where to start on this one. A lot of this is actually a sad story, but a very important one that needs to be told.

We need to know the terrible things that happened in the past, so that we don’t let them happen again in the future.

The story is told by Eddie, when he is at the age of 100. He tells of how he feels like the happiest man on earth, as he has made it his goal to be happy, and to make the world a better place for others.

He tells of how, as a child in Germany, he was captured by the nazis, in the Holocaust, and the war. Just for being Jewish.

He tells of how there were millions of people killed, and he himself, and millions others, were enslaved, tortured, and malnourished.

Even though going through all of that, he said that despite his experiences, he does not hate anyone.

Hate is a disease that may destroy your enemy, but will also destroy you in the process,

Eddie shows that we can always have hope. No matter what you are going through, or have been through, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

That no matter what, you can be happy.

Greenlights

Author: Matthew McConaughey

Alright, Alright, Alright. This is a really great book.

A different style of auto biography, Matthew McConaughey describes his book as part memoir, part guide to life, part collection of extracts from his diaries.

And an all round story of his life so far.

Matthew, the award-winning actor who stars in so many movies, shares things about his family, how he grew up, and all different stories along the way. Unique, funny, and inspiring, this is another can’t put down, or stop listening, book.

“Greenlights” is a term for anything that’s good, and makes us feel we are on the right track.

Matthew believes that “a greenlight is being kind to our future self. It’s things in our life that affirm our way, they say ‘go, proceed, more, please carry on.’ While yellow and red lights make us slow down in life — they can be crisis, hardship, intervention, interruption.”

He goes on to say, “The verb of the greenlight metaphor is really in the yellow light, meaning you have the choice to slow down and stop and let it become a red light, which sometimes we need to do in life when we need to have some introspection. But oftentimes, you see that yellow light and the choice is to put the pedal to the metal and don’t give that little crisis credit. It doesn’t deserve your time. Maybe it was false drama that if we would have slowed down and stopped we would have been dwelling on it and turned that molehill into a mountain.”

He actually goes on to say a lot of cool things.

He also says, “I found all the red and yellow lights in life revealed themselves to have at least a greenlight asset in the future. They have a lesson in them that we were supposed to learn. Any hardship, any pause we took, any intervention, interruption… they have greenlight assets that will be revealed to us later.”

McConaughey adds, “Red and yellow lights eventually turn green in the rearview mirror.”

This book is inspirational, fun, educational, and helps to share Matthew’s passion for life with the rest of us.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to Polyamory: Everything You Need to Know About Open Relationships, Non-Monogamy, and Alternative Love

Author: Dedeker Winston

Telling her own story in the experiences of relationships, love, and life, Dedeker also starts out exploring the history of relationships. From thousands of years ago, before most cultures of the world decided that monogamy was the way to go – and destroyed the cultures that wouldn’t conform – to times and cultures where polyamory flourished.

Polyamory is the practise of engaging in multiple romantic relationships. Of having more than one lover. Of having an alternative way of living and loving.

For a lot of people, non-monogamy is a way of life, leading to individuals, and relationships, being more happy, healthy, and fulfilled than would be possible with monogamy.

This is a book that anyone can read, either to get more insight into yourself, and how you are – or to learn about what could be possible. Or just to learn about how others feel.

The Smart Girl’s Guide to Polyamory is an intelligent and comprehensive guide to polyamory, open relationships, and other forms of alternative love, offering relationship advice radically different from anything you’ll find on the magazine rack.

I’ve always been polyamorous, or non-monogamous, and I’m completely happy with how I am.

Although I’ve never until now read a whole book dedicated to this topic. I think this will be the first of many.

It’s very interesting, informative, and mind-expanding.

Highly recommended for anyone who thinks it sounds interesting.

I love books, I love audiobooks, and I love sharing great experiences – so I thought I’d share these books with you. If you’ve read any of these, or if you do read any, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Stay tuned for future book reviews!
